My little sister is a fantastic baker, she is a few years younger than me but her knowledge on food is quite vast; She made crepes from scratch for me last week— REALLY GOOD Nutella-banana crepes!
She makes her notorious pancakes for our family from time to time without using cream, butter or sugar and still manages to compose a delicious bowl of non-fat heaven!
I already know she is going to be an amazing cook when she is older because one noticeable fact about her is that, my sister always watches my mom cook and constantly asks my mom questions… whereas I never did; I was always just one to eat and not question the process 😉 😛 Regardless, I think we can all agree that food is marvelous, and that one of the best feelings in the world is to satisfy your hunger!
One day I was REALLY hungry, and after watching a cake video on Youtube, I of course subsequently had the urge to make a cake myself. I may not be as talented as my sister in baking but that did not stop me… unfortunately what did stop me was the fact that I did not have all the ingredients for an easy-bake cake recipe. I then quickly googled easy-bake brownie recipes, and one recipe popped up which required a maximum of 4 ingredients- “BLESS MY SOUL!” I thought, “These brownies will be easy and fun to bake!”
However, something had definitely went wrong somewhere at some point, because when I took the brownies out of the oven, they were rock hard. I cannot explain the level of disappointment that I had in myself…I was not only frustrated because I could not figure out a simple 4- ingredient recipe, but I was also frustrated because I was super hungry. I was about to throw out all the brownies and feed myself some yogurt, but my mom came running down and asked what the “great smell” was. I explained to my mom that I was baking and burnt all the brownies, and advised her to ignore the “great smell” since no form of bakery would be served. My mom naturally ignored me and proceeded to try my rock hard brownies, and to my surprise she LOVED them! She told me that if I had just called my creation “chocolate cookies” instead of brownies, then the item would be incredible! I realized that I was so busy being frustrated that I had never even tried a bite of my “chocolate cookies”, and after I tried a bite, I recognized and accepted that it was not bad at all!
I came to understand that sometimes situations do not go the way you plan or the way you expect it go, but you have to see the positive aspect in all circumstances…you may think that the outcome is objectively negative, but that itself may just be your subjective opinion. With every mistake there is something to learn, and a new perspective to take!
With that being said, now tell me… which of these foods do you like?
- Chocolate chip cookies
- Potato chips
- Ice cream cones
- Kellogg’s cereal
- Pink lemonade
- Hawaiian pizza
Well guess what? All these foods were mistakes and were invented by accident.
Be open to your mistakes, accept them and learn from them— try to look at situations from a different perspective, rather than honing in on the way you wanted the outcome to be… you may be missing a world of opportunities if you narrow your vision. Perspective is key!
Don’t forget to be kind and spread love!
