On Sunday July 16th 2017, all us contestants got to become event bloggers, tasked with the duty of expressing our own experience of attending the 2017 MWC Sponsor Party as VIP! All of our incredible sponsors are looking to make an impact.

At the Sponsor Party, we encountered representatives of these amazing brands and local attractions. We all made our way around the room to check out all the different people there and to learn a bit about their products while also getting to test some of them out! I’ve spent all week trying out some of these incredible brands and products!

Maxine Warsh, inventor of the “Warsh Cloth” taught us all about the water in our skin and how to best clean cosmetics from skin! This amazing woman is going to save my skin so much this week! As someone who doesn’t normally wear much makeup, the makeup for the pageant can be pretty harsh on my skin. But Maxine Warsh and her Warsh cloth are helping to keep my skin healthy skin! <3

Selfies with the beautiful Maxine Warsh!

Pina and Lucy from The Kraco set up an awesome display of beauty products and accessories, and treated us to some sweets, too! Each of us got a lip tint, lip balm, and shea butter to test out. I grabbed the Pink Grapefruit lip balm and Renew Red lip tint.

Kraco all natural lip tint & lip balm (+ shea butter) made with shea butter!

I can honestly say that the pink grapefruit is not only the tastiest lip balm I’ve ever had, and also the smoothest to put on! And that red lip tint is ON POINT! (y)

Ready for a night out with my Kraco Renew Red Lip Tint!

We also each got to see the shoes we’ll be wearing on stage TONIGHT from our official shoe sponsor, Nine West! I can’t wait to rock out in my Nine West heels! Nine West has given me TWO firsts with these shoes! They are my very first pair of shoes from Nine West, but also my very first pair of nude heels! Plus they’re super cute 😉

About to check out our pageant shoes provided by Nine West!!!

Nine West shoes for evening gown

We broke in the heels during the swimwear competition at prelims on Thursday!

There was a table there for Skechers too! Unfortunately for my poor feet (I was in heels all night!) I didn’t end up making it over to the Skechers table to try on any shoes, but they sure looked comfortable!

Borrowing the beautiful Darina’s picture because she makes these shoes look GREAT!

I also learned about Snappy Towels for the first time! Snappy Towels microfiber beach towels gave away blue and pink beach balls to make sure we’re all beach ready for when the summer remembers to stop being spring and the weather is nice again! 😉

Of course, I got blue since it’s my favourite colour.

I got lipstick all over this while blowing it up!

Snappy Towels later invited us to take a “Saltwater Selfie” for a chance to WIN FREE Snappy Towels!

We also got to take some Boomerang selfies at the Raven social media photo booth! Robin was killing it with so many crowns and sashes high heels – she helped make the party much more memorable.

We were also SUPER blessed by the presence of Isabella Hoops Entertainment who sent hula hoop performers to put on a show and also give us pointers on how to look bomb while hula hooping instead of just silly! Something I could use some work on 😉

Isabella Hoops Entertainment

JUST CHECK OUT the LED hula hoops! And she even had flags and ribbons to dance with!

The gift giving and getting went on for what seemed like an eternity, but it wasn’t long enough! I didn’t want it to end 🙁

Hashtagio social media aggregator was there  too, but not really, – every Instagram picture tagged #MissWorldCanadaHashtagio social media aggregator

Archer Dental also sent ahead dozens of tiny gift bags loaded with dental supplies – there was a massive array of dental products on hand.  I got myself a blue (of course) toothbrush and some new travel toothpaste! Which was perfect because I was running REALLY low…no one would have wanted to talk to me 😛 Plus my dentist office always gives me a pink toothbrush for some reason…I can’t remember the last time I had a non-pink toothbrush!

Archer DentalAnd because it was displayed in such a prime spot in the whole horseshoe array of tables, Archer Dental had to share her table with Lily Liao of Street Chic who gave away very cute tank tops emblazzoned with the slogan “I Like it when you smile and I love it when I’m the reason” which is a very fashion forward proposition and one that fits perfectly with Miss World Canada

The real honest truth

And Lily even said that she created these tanks with us Miss World Canada delegates in mind!! Because she said we are (one of) her reason to smile! Isn’t she just too sweet!?!! <3

Lily Liao showing off her super cute tank top!

And Ryan from Tastic Marketing ran a busy booth –

After we had finished going around to check everything out, it was time for FOOD <3 I was so excited to eat!

eat-buffet-lunch1

And then we got CAKE! Which I literally followed around until it was cut and I got a slice! Miss Hamilton World actually teases me because I was running after the cake! And then I ended up with 2 slices!

It was definitely a night to remember!

Since I’ve been in Toronto at the pageant all week, I have really been missing home while I’ve been gone.  So since it’s been on my mind, I wanted to tell you about what I miss most—besides my family, of course!

I think people overlook the Durham Region because well…it’s no Toronto.  It doesn’t look as pretty as some other Canadian regions.  Oshawa is even lovingly referred to as “The Dirty ‘Shwa”.  But those people just don’t know where to look!  So I’m here to show you.

If you were to ask me my favourite place to go in the Durham Region, I would probably give a very flustered mumbling of…not even words.

Because the truth is: My favourite place(s) to go is a little nook or cranny of the beautiful nature that can be found throughout the Durham Region.  I love to go exploring my region, just walking around to find some of the natural beauty that my region has to offer.

This was from a “wanderful” walk that I took literally across the street from my house in Oshawa!

I have always had an interest in photography and have a tendency to see the world “through a lens”.  Even when I don’t have my camera with me, I see the world in pictures.  I see everything in the best light possible, and frame it in my mind how it would look in a picture.

You’d be surprised how good just some trees in a small nature-y area in Whitby can look!

PS. I really like daisies. They’re a very photogenic flower!

I actually used to walk around everywhere with a camera literally around my neck!  Just in case I happened upon something I didn’t want to ever forget.  And I would get up at ungodly hours of the morning to take pictures during the dawn.

My street at 5AM

One place I think everyone can appreciate in the Durham Region is the shores of Lake Ontario.  With the calm, cool waves; the sun shining along the water; the sandy beaches; the piers and lighthouses; the stony pathways; and the rocks leading out to the water.  What’s not to love?

Really, my favourite place in Durham Region is everywhere.  Because I think I could find beauty in just about anything.

But if I had to choose just one place, it would probably have to be the grounds and gardens of Parkwood Estate and gardens in Oshawa.

The Parkwood Mansion

The mansion belonged to Mr. Robert Samuel McLaughlin and his family back in the early 1900’s.  R. S. McLaughlin helped found the McLaughlin Motor Car Company, which joined forces with the General Motors Corporation to help keep the company alive and to keep production in Oshawa.  He and his family had achieved “First Family” status in Oshawa by 1915 when construction of the mansion began.

This absolutely stunning Estate was declared a National Historic Site, and while Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday, Parkwood Estate is celebrating its 100th year of being a National Historic Site! Parkwood is a great place to just look around and relax, and for photoshoots for proms, weddings, and more!

Me and my baby sister at her prom photo shoot at Parkwood

I just LOVE the gardens

The estate is also VERY famous, having been used as a set in MANY movies and TV shows! You may recognize it from…

  • Billy Madison (Film, 1995)
  • X-Men (Film, 1999)
  • Chicago (Film, 2002)
  • Bullet Proof Monk (Film, 2002)
  • A Catered Affair (TV show, 2005)
  • Murdoch Mysteries (TV show, 2009, 2013)
  • Nikita (TV show, 2010-2012)
  • Lost Girl (TV show, 2011)
  • Hemlock Grove (TV series, 2012, 2013, 2015)
  • Hannibal (TV series, 2014-2015)

To name a few… And they actually currently have a disruption for filming until July 23rd!

Parkwood is a place that is not only absolutely beautiful, but it also has a rich and interesting history. I miss going to take photos of the gardens, and even the building itself for the unique architecture. I’m looking forward to going back once I’m home!

So after the Valentine’s Day event, I took a bit of a break from making appearances. Not just as Miss Durham World 2017, but as Katie too. I basically became a hermit, going outside only to go to class, and spending the rest of my time doing homework.

But FEAR NOT! I sneaked back out of my hidey hole just before exams to make a special early Easter appearance at April’s monthly One Stop Shop in Durham Region!

Oh, why hello there. My name is Katie, Miss Durham World 2017. Welcome to my crib.

Each month, a handful of local businesses come together to create a fundraising vendors market (a One Stop Shop!) event with a 50/50 and raffle in support of a local charity.

On April 9th, I joined the vendors of One Stop Shop at the Shriner’s Club in Oshawa in support of the Durham Mental Health Association and mental health awareness.  And since it was so close to Easter, this month, the Easter Bunny stopped by to give out free chocolates!

I had the pleasure of greeting people at the door and helping hand out swag bags to the first 50 people.

Handing out #Swag bags

Later in the day, I got the chance to talk to some of the great vendors, and I even got to go on an Easter Egg Hunt!

Chatting up the vendors!

Making plans for how to hunt down those sneaky little chocolate eggs

This little guy was too shy to ask the Easter Bunny for another chocolate, but found some (wrapped) chocolate eggs on the floor nearby! So we decided to go on a dangerous hunt down the treacherous hardwood floors, and through the valley of the vendors to find more…

Disclaimer: No children were harmed in the making of this over-exaggerated story.

Later on, I got to wind down and socialize with some of the attendees, and just hangout for a bit with my new friend and read some of his awesome new comic books!

Letting this beautiful little girl try on my crown

Who could resist that smile!

Doing a little light reading…okay, just looking at the pictures…same thing, right?

All in all, it was a great day in support of a great cause.  And definitely worth missing a day of studying for exams!

For my second event as Miss Durham World 2017, my sash arrived JUST in time!

My first crown and sash photo (Feb. 9)

This past Valentine’s Day, or February 14th for those who are in denial, I helped a chapter of MedLife run their “Kissing Booth” event. No…I did not kiss people. I sold Hershey’s Kisses! Get it? 😉 I also sold lots of roses! Mostly roses.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Using a photo from my first event to advertise my second one!

That morning, I woke up at 5:30 AM to get prepped and pretty to sell roses in a busy atrium of my university. Let me tell you, a just-woken-up-after-sleeping-only-6-hours-Katie is not such a pretty sight. But I don’t usually do too much in terms of hair and makeup, and I wasn’t sure how long it would take me, so I got up extra early just in case!

After curling my hair the way that used to make me cry as a child, but I absolutely love now, and doing more than my usual makeup routine, I was ready to go. Well…after putting on a pretty dress and my crown and sash of course. And I mean, it was cold, so I took the extra precaution of wearing sweatpants under my dress until I got there! 😉

Almost ready to sell some Valentines roses!

Actual photo of me about to walk out the door…this was taken by accident!

Once I made it out of the cold and into the atrium for the event, I helped to set up the table so it could feel as pretty as me! And you know, attract people’s attention. That too.

“Kissing Booth” where I helped sell roses all done up

I am proud to say that by the end of the day, we had sold about 5 dozen roses, and raised over $200 for the MedLife Project Fund which goes directly towards funding community development projects in low-income countries.  These development projects put solutions in place to make sure that medicines and health services are delivered and available to the poor.

The event was a huge success, raising more than double what was raised at the same event last year! We even ran out of roses- Twice.

Posing at our beautiful table!

I’m so glad I was able to be a part of this event and for a cause that I am truly passionate about. Thank you MedLife UOIT/DC for this incredible opportunity!

XOXOXO

Since I was late getting this started, we’ve got some catching up to do!

Back in February, I attended my very first event as Miss Durham [Region] World 2017. I didn’t even have my sash yet, but I just could not miss out on the opportunity to help out at this incredible event! You may recognize this photo from my Facebook page:

Posing with the photo wall at The Princess Ball in my Volunteer sash

On February 5th, 2017 the Durham chapter of Cystic Fibrosis held their annual Princess Ball in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. As someone who dreams of becoming a pediatrician, and who had just won a title and (more importantly) a crown, this was definitely the most perfect way to kick off my reign as Miss Durham World 2017!

It all started when a friend of mine made a Facebook post about the event needing an extra volunteer or two…the day before the event. So I, of course, being of sound mind and stressed to the nines, decided to message him and offer my assistance. So at 9pm the night before, I got all the details and decided to be ready for 9am to go and help out despite the pile of assignments I had due…Sound decisions √

Standing with the man who started it all

I was lucky enough to not only make an appearance, but I also got to help out at the Cupcake Decoration Station! Although, sadly, I did not get a cupcake…

When I arrived, I helped out a bit with set up tying ribbons to balloons. Thanks to my title and beautiful crown (which by the way, is very heavy!) as the adorable princesses (and a few very handsome princes!) arrived, I got to be there to welcome them and clap excitedly as they walked in! The Hi-fives were awesome! Once everyone had arrived, I headed over to help out at the cupcake table where I got to help girls decorate their cupcakes 🙂

After decorating cupcakes, I got to meet a couple other pageant queens and some REAL princesses and dance with all the beautiful little princes!

The Snow Queen, Cindi, Miss Durham Region and Miss Toronto Globe 2016, the lovely Mary, myself, and Snow at the CF Princess Ball

And at the end of it all, I won a gift basket in the raffle!

The Goods

I am so thankful for all those who helped organize the event, all those who helped make it happen, and of course, the awesome human who helped get me there! Together, we raised $9000 toward the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis!

I am so glad that I got the opportunity to be a part of such an incredible event; it is not one I will soon forget <3

XOXOXO

Katie, Miss Durham World 2017

Things I Learned…

  • I absolutely can attend and help out at an event last minute!
  • Bobby pins are a necessary evil if I want to keep my crown on my tiny head
  • I love spending time with kids!
  • A bunch of little girls all dressed up and feeling like princesses is just about the most adorable thing ever
  • If I can make a little girl smile and feel beautiful, all my stress is 100% worth it.
  • I may never forget that cupcake I didn’t get… R.I.P.

Hello from Katherine, Miss Durham Region World 2017!

I am absolutely thrilled to be starting this blog and introducing myself to you as the newly (well…since January…I’m a bit late) crowned Miss Durham Region World 2017!

The first thing you should know is that although my name is Katherine, I will mostly be going by Katie.  I mean, I totally look more like a Katie, don’t you think?

Katie, Miss Durham Region World 2017

The Miss World Ontario pageant was actually my FIRST. PAGEANT. EVER. And let me tell you, it was the most exciting, terrifying, fun, nerve-racking experience of my life. A pageant is so more more than I had ever imagined. It’s a lot harder and a lot more work than I thought. But it’s also been A LOT of fun, and I met some AMAZING girls, and I honestly can’t wait to do it all again in July for Miss World Canada!

Miss World Ontario 2017

I was absolutely in awe when my name was announced on stage that night, and I found out I had won a title and would be competing for the national title. At first I didn’t believe it! A shy girl from Oshawa, now on her way to compete for the unbelievable opportunity to represent ALL of Canada?! *explosion* MIND. BLOWN.

It’s an absolute honor to have been chosen to represent the Durham Region and all of its diversity and vibrancy that is so often overlooked.

I can’t wait to tell you more about myself and my pageant journey! Leave a comment and tell me about yourself! You can find out a bit more about me below 🙂

With love

Katie, Miss Durham Region World 2017

XOXOXO

About Me!

Education

I spent the last 4 years of my life studying Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology #shoutout and graduated with my BHSc with Highest Distinction last Thursday!

Celebrating after convocation

This face just graduated!

I will be going back in September to embark on the new journey I hope my Master’s will bring! My ultimate goal is to go to Medical school and study to become a pediatrician! I have always loved working with children and youth, and as you’ll soon discover, I have a vested interest in ensuring good health for everyone, starting from birth.

Hobbies, Interests, and Talents

I like to think I am very versatile in terms of what I like to do and try. I always want to try new things, and am usually pretty quick to catch on. Because of that, I have a really varied set of skills and interests such as…

  • Singing/ Karaoke/ embarrassing my family at the grocery store
  • Dancing/ dancing badly on purpose/ see above
  • Baking, especially cookies, but recently cakes. All from scratch. No cheating!

Flowers blooming on a tree at Le Nordik Spa in Quebec

  • Photography/ seeing the world in the best light, but not being able to capture it
  • Soccer/ getting in people’s way (I play defense!)
  • Volunteering (I don’t know if this counts as a hobby, but I do it a lot and enjoy it!)
  • Making random crafts/drawings
  • Puzzles/ Puzzle games
  • Learning/ Researching science-y things!

And some very random talents such as…

  • I can lick my elbow. But only the right one. That left one always eludes me…
  • Making bad jokes/puns. But I mean really, the worse they are, the funnier it is!

    Guitar/ Singing practice

  • Playing guitar + singing. Strummed, not stirred.
  • Figuring things out after already doing them the hard way… (e.g. I entered the codes to change font colours and then found the toolbar button…)
  • Juggling! But only 2…more than that, you must be a wizard or something
  • The Human Doughnut. My term for being able to roll myself into a ball…it looks weird. You don’t want to see it. Trust me.
  • I can burp the alphabet. I don’t. But I can.

Fun Facts! …Besides random talents

  • I was on a rowing team once! I was the coxie…yelling at people is not my thing
  • I have 3 siblings: 2 biological (older brother, younger sister) and 1 adopted (older brother)
  • My favourite colour is blue (not that blue, but close!)
  • I LOVE to travel! I mean, who doesn’t?
  • I’m really into sci-fi!
  • I’ve never blogged before! Thank you for being my guinea pigs! 😉
