Greetings from Miss Ottawa 2019, Melissa Felian! Last week I had the honour of speaking at the Rotary Club in Ottawa. For those of you that don’t know, the Rotary Club is an international organization that aims to promote service and giving back. The Ottawa chapter in particular supports charitable causes involving children and refugees, causes that are dear to me.
When I was in high school, the Rotary Club in Mississauga sponsored me to attend a program called Camp Enterprise, a three-day course that taught me the soft skills needed to succeed in the workforce and in business. I learned how to speak, pitch and develop presence. These skills seem straightforward at first glance, but as a shy high schooler, some of the things I learned at Camp Enterprise were ground-breaking. At the end of the course, the Rotarians encouraged us to come back to the Rotary Club at some point to speak to our successes and how we are using our skills towards service.
I was excited to meet members of the Rotary Club Ottawa over lunch as well as learn about some of the work they were doing. I also had the opportunity to speak to the fundraising work I am doing for the Children’s Wish Foundation, as well as the volunteer work I hope to do for newcomers.
I felt a tremendous joy in being at the Rotary Club in Ottawa, everyone was warm, kind and welcoming. Thank you for having me!
