They say the heart of a city can be found in it’s Downtown. For my first blog assignment i’m going to give you an insider look at some of my favourite hidden gems located in the heart of my city, Downtown Sudbury.

Best known for its vibrant atmosphere and creative culture, whether you’re looking for a nice place to eat or a place to enjoy some live entertainment Downtown Sudbury has it all. What I love most about Sudbury’s Downtown is that many of the businesses and organizations located there are locally owned so everytime you shop Downtown you’re supporting local business owners and the local economy. Over the past year I have had the pleasure of working for Downtown Sudbury and it has helped me gain a new appreciation for everything Downtown has to offer. Most of my time when not on campus is spent Downtown everything from my gym, work and favourite coffee shops and restaurants are all located in the heart of Downtown Sudbury. Follow along as I share with you some of my favourite spots to visit.

The seating area at KuppaJo Espresso Bar

The first place i’d like to mention is a place where I spend a good portion of my time and that is my favourite place to enjoy a nice cup of coffee, KuppaJo Espresso Bar. KuppaJo is located at 109 Larch Street and they have the best Chai Tea Lattes in town. The decor is full of art from local artists and the warm, welcoming environment makes it the best place to grab coffee with a group of friends or study. To check out their menu and stay connected with them you can go to their website at: https://www.kuppajocoffee.ca/

My favourite thing on the menu: Chicken Tinga Tacos. Yum!

I have always been a foodie. One of my favourite parts of travelling is getting to try the area’s cuisine because I think food is the best way to get to know people and the best way to a girl’s heart is her stomach. One thing that there is an abundance of in Downtown Sudbury is great food! There’s everything from fresh sushi to bakeries and everything in between. However, I want to give a special shoutout to two of my personal favourites: Taco Sol and Peppi Panini. Both are amazing locally owned businesses. Taco Sol brings a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine to Sudbury, with amazing tacos and such friendly employees I always leave with a huge smile on my face.

The Venice Veggie!

Peppi Panini on the other hand sells authentic italian cuisine. My favourite thing to order there is their Venice Veggie panini, it’s a must try! To get more information you can check them out at https://www.tacosolsudbury.com/ and http://www.peppipanini.ca/

I have always loved the arts. Growing up as a dancer and a performer the arts have always had a special place in my heart. With arts and culture making a resurgence in my city, Downtown Sudbury has become an incubator for local artists to come and explore. Sudbury has been doing some amazing things to revive the art community and become a place where artists can thrive. Starting with Up Here Festival (https://uphere.com/#2018), an annual festival which features music, art installations and murals, Sudbury is now home to over 100 different murals scattered across the city.

An art installation at this year’s Nuit Blanche.

The Laurentian University School of Architecture has also joined in on the fun by hosting an annual one night event which celebrates students’ art called, this event is called Nuit Blanche and it takes place at the School of Architecture each year (https://lasa-aeal.com/nuitblanche2017/). I would also like to highlight my friends over at Branch Collective who have brought the creative and collective side of dance back to Sudbury with the annual week long workshop that includes a variety of different dance related community events (https://www.branchintensive.com/). I believe that art is the key to building a great community. Communities need art to foster creativity and sense of togetherness. The fact that Sudbury has begun supporting and encouraging its artists makes me so unbelievably proud and I am thankful that I am able to be a part of it.

Downtown really does contain Sudbury’s hidden gems—from nightlife to arts and culture, sporting events to specialty boutiques— their shops, events, and cafés offer something for everyone. If you’re ever in Sudbury be sure to check out the Downtown core, you’re sure to find something you love.

Until next time!
