As a registered mental health nurse, an actor, an adventurer, and a feminist, you are probably wondering – how did I end up competing in Miss World Canada?

To be truthfully honest, hardwork and probably a fair bit of luck!

After completing a BSc in Honours Health Science and a BSc in Nursing, I have finally started working as a Registered Nurse in an Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit.  In addition to my academics, I have also continued my passion in the acting and modelling industry for the past 8 years…landing various TV roles, print campaigns, and proudly model for IT cosmetics on The Shopping Channel.  And now, I can add Miss World Canada 2018!

If I had to sum all this up into one sentence: it is because I am not afraid to say YES.  Now this may sound funny, but the power of yes is one of the best mindsets you can adopt.  Let’s look at how saying yes can work for you too!

Do not be afraid of new experiences.  You will surprise yourself to what you can accomplish. Go out on a date with that guy, take on a new task at work, try a new fitness workout.  I have always said, you mostly regret the things you don’t do. It’s as easy as that…simply saying yes.  Now I am not endorsing risk taking behaviors, don’t get it twisted!  I am talking about seizing every opportunity that comes your way.  You will have new experiences, new learning opportunities, meet new people, and become the best version of yourself.

Have a schedule.  Make sure you are organized.  I don’t mean you should say yes to EVERYTHING.  But when you do say yes, you need to make sure you can fit it into your schedule!  I have a daily calendar where I have a task list of what I need to get done each day.  This includes scheduling my nursing shifts, scheduling fundraisers and different events, but also making time for friends and family.  Remember, work/life balance is very important.

Do not let any 1 quality or characteristic define you.  Be who you want to be.  But at the same time, do not be afraid to try new things just because it doesn’t seem to ‘fit’ with the things you are used to.  I am proud to have so many passions in life.  From travelling across the world, to working on sets as an actor, to caring for my clients as a registered nurse, and continually supporting equality for women.  Yet having any one of those qualities does not make me any less of the other.  We are ALL more than one quality. So be willing to try something you haven’t done before.  Allow yourself to say yes, and you may discover a whole new side of yourself.

Be self-reflective.  Continuously assess your thoughts, feelings, and emotional state.  What went well in your day, what didn’t, and how you can improve for next time?  For example, if you tried something new you didn’t like – lets say you tried a new item at your fav sushi restaurant.  That’s okay.  Now you can say: I tried it, I didn’t like it, so I don’t have to do it again!

The power of yes is an amazing concept.  By saying yes to new experiences, we are able to tear down labels and go outside our comfort zone.  This is exactly how I ended up here, about to compete in Miss World Canada 2018 – and I couldn’t be happier that I said yes.  Just remember, we are all intelligent, beautiful, kind and funny in our own way.  And you can express that in any way you like.  Be strong, be kind, and be confident in yourself.  And don’t be afraid to just say yes 😉

With love and kindness,
