Last Sunday July 1st I was honoured to be a part of the Markham Canada Day Parade. This parade is an event that happens annually in the city that I live in, and it was my first time participating in it. The event was very exciting for my family and I, as we all dressed up in red and white, and decorated our car with Canadian flags. I was fortunate enough to have my dad drive and my little cousins accompany me in the car. It was great seeing many members from the Markham community come out to watch the parade and celebrate Canada Day. A wide range of cultural groups participated in the parade, broadcasting how Canada takes pride in our diversity and encourages acceptance to all people! It was also great running into Miss Ontario World 2018, Alice, as we both participated in the parade!
As luck would have it, I recently had four of my wisdom teeth removed, so my face was swollen during the parade. I was so embarrassed to go out in public after my surgery, let alone being in front of my whole community with a swollen face. However, I was able to overcome this fear by reminding myself that you should not let your insecurities stop you from doing something you love. At the end of the day, your physical appearance is not the only thing that should have importance in your life. I was not going to let my insecurity stop me from getting involved in my community, because looks are not everything. So ultimately I was able to proudly join the rest of Markham in celebrating Canada Day.
This was a great day to reflect and celebrate all the progress our country has made till this day. I’m so happy that we were all able to come together as a community to celebrate the 151st birthday of our country. I definitely felt the love and pride York Region has for our country, Canada!
Happy Canada Day!
