My name is Bisleen and I am excited to represent the Peel Region in this year’s Miss World Canada pageant.
Miss World Canada is my first pageant and it has been an incredible journey so far. My favourite part has been getting involved in the community and kick-starting my initiative, Mental Health – Let’s Talk About It. It has been a great experience empowering the youth in the community and I will write more about it in my next blog. For now, here’s more about me!
My family and I moved to Canada from India in 2001, when I was five years old. I have lived in the Peel Region for the past 16 years and love being part of such a diverse and multicultural community.
I graduated from the University of Waterloo in December 2017 with a Major in Honors Science and a Biology Minor. I was an active member of my university community and worked to provide support to students in a number of different roles. I worked as a Residence Don, Biology Lab Teaching Assistant, Student Ambassador and Science Mentor.
Some members of my Residence Team and I at the 2017 Residence Life Conference.
All of these experiences allowed me to discover my passion of providing support to other individuals and led me to the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine where I am now studying to be a Naturopathic Doctor. Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care profession that uses a patient-centered approach with traditional healing methods to provide support to patients. I just finished my first semester and I am so grateful to be a part of this profession.
This was taken right before we finished our last exam of first semester!
As important as education is to me, I believe that balance is the key to life and that there is always enough time for the things you love to do. Here are some things that I am extremely passionate about and always make time for!
I enjoy running, it is one of my favourite ways to stay active. In high school, I was a part of the Cross-Country and Track and Field team, where I fell in love with the sport. I have participated in one marathon and two half-marathons. In October, I will be running in the Scotia Bank Waterfront Half-Marathon.
This was after I finished the 21.5km North Face Challenge at Blue Mountain in July 2017.
I have a Siberian Husky named Java, who am I extremely passionate about. He just turned four in March and he gets cuter by the year! He is my favourite study buddy and will sit with me for hours while I study for my exams. Java loves to eat and meet new people. He is the joy of our family. He is also very smart and below you can see a video of him doing some of his tricks.
I am also passionate about volunteering and supporting the community that I live in. I have previously volunteered at long-term care facilities, Grand River Hospital and with the Science Outreach Program at the University of Waterloo. Currently, I volunteer with an number of different community organizations to raise awareness about youth mental health.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Miss World Canada pageant this July and represent my region. As a titleholder, I hope to empower the young women of Canada to embrace their femininity and follow their dreams, whatever they may be.
